EspaƱol Service Available

Schumpert Hospital was a historic medical institution in Shreveport, Louisiana, founded in 1894 by Dr. T.E. Schumpert, who opened a small 16-bed hospital. In 1907, he partnered with the Sisters of Charity to run the hospital and nursing school, and upon his death from typhoid fever in 1908, he willed the hospital to the sisters. As Shreveport grew, so did the hospital. In 1911, the Sisters of Charity opened a 666-bed hospital at St. Mary Place, which thrived for nearly 50 years. Then in 1957, they opened one of the most modern hospitals in America at Margaret Place, which was fully air-conditioned and featured Louisiana's first cobalt unit for cancer treatment. The hospital continued to evolve with the city's growth, and in 1999, Schumpert established a satellite clinic off Youree Drive. KTBS Today, it operates as part of CHRISTUS Schumpert Health System in the CHRISTUS Shreveport-Bossier network, though the original Margaret Place location closed after serving the community for over a century.
